Things were better in the past, here’s a few examples.
5 - SST
The dream of supersonic commercial flight is over, deal with it and enjoy your boring twinjets.
Sorry, kids.
4 - Space Shuttles
We’re back to rocket launched capsules, like in the 50’s, apparently.
Sorry, kids.
3 - Proper BMW’s
Enjoy your luxury bloated crossovers with fake engine noise.
Sorry, kids.
2 - Tall towers
Unless you live in the UAE, 50 stories is deemed “Sufficient”, thanks to lousy fire depts and insurance costs.
Sorry, kids.
1 - Proper RWD, simple wagons.
You can’t fix your drive-by-wire “crossover” by yourself anymore and keep it for 25 years.
Keep up with the Joneses and buy a Ford Escape, and deal with its planned obsolescence in 8 years, or just lease it like phony people.
Sorry, kids.

5) The vast majority of us would’ve never been able to afford to fly that way, anyway
4) The Space Shuttle (fanboi as I am) was arguably a compromise that probably shouldn’t have happened anyway. We would’ve been farther along in “manned deep(er) space” development if we never built the Shuttle and stayed the course developing that 1950’s technology.
3) That’s ok, we have proper Mustangs now ;) (/Ford fanboi, too)
2) Ok, this one is a little sad
1) This isn’t etched in stone just yet (although the demise of the traditional wagon is a true tragedy)

You sound a bit like a bean counter, what is your daily occupation ?
![]() 05/06/2015 at 20:11 |

I’m a product manager. A bean counter would’ve been overjoyed that the Space Shuttle happened and certainly wouldn’t like Mustangs.

BTW, I think the 777-300 is more attractive than the Concorde. Sorry if your head explodes.

I think you have some explaining to do.
Why ?
Meh ... looks like a stretched 737 to me

5: Nah, man. If it was over, Lockheed, et al. would not be investing so much capital in to furthering SST research particularly its issues with traveling over land.
4: Brian got this one much more succinctly than I could, so substitute his response here.
3: “Proper” BMW died a long time ago
2: I haven’t yet seen or been in a tower over 20 stories as it is. Thanks, southwest upbringing!
1: The proper wagon you posted an image of will, in fact, never die.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the Concorde is a beautiful aircraft. I just love the way big airliners look and the proportions on the -300 are just fantastic.
Plus, those massive GEs (just a foot narrower than a 737s fuselage) are awesome.

The death of the Concorde still blows my mind…it’s like humanity collectively took a step forward, and then a step backward. A joint Franco-British project, representing the best of both nations, the promise of supersonic flight…and then just…nothing. We go back to the same speeds we had before then.
Yeah yeah yeah, people talk about sonic booms, but what if they just made a ton of routes that were ONLY over-ocean ones, and only went from coastal city to coastal city?
San Francisco to Tokyo
Los Angeles to Sydney
Miami to Cape Town
New York to London
Boston to Lisbon
?

4) Don’t know about that. The only thing that got us into going to other worlds was so we could keep those dirty commies in russia from getting there first. We needed a way to beat them without also reducing large portions of our planet to ash, and getting to the moon gave us that.
Then the USSR collapsed, and we weren’t competing with anyone for space travel anymore, then NASAs budget got smaller along with their ambitions, and nobody else was in a position to pick up the torch and keep running. I don’t think a universe that doesn’t have a space shuttle in it would result in sped up development for human exploration of deep space, if everything else remained the same.

We’re back to rocket launched capsules, like in the 50’s, apparently.
We’re doing a lot of things the same way we’ve always done them. You can count on your fingers all of the truly recent innovative technological developments, and all of those without exception build upon pre-existing technology in a non-trivial way.
The space shuttle is cool. But as they both make use of rocketry, it’s also not significantly different from launching a space capsule.

We still build supertall skyscrapers, the floor counts just aren’t as high anymore due to higher ceilings, taller decorative spires, and more dedicated mechanical/service levels. There is an 1100+ft. tower under construction in Philadelphia right now.
And the Space Shuttle was never really that great of a design to begin with. The capsule-based Apollo program got us the the Moon, the Shuttle couldn’t leave low Earth orbit, and, despite being partially reusable, was actually more expensive to launch than the old rockets. The safety record also wound up being not so hot, I mean, 40% of all the ones built were destroyed in fatal accidents.

5) Those tickets were overpriced as all fuck anyways
4) Good. Let’s not go back to a program meant for orbital missions only. Let’s go somewhere else
3) No one buys “enthusiast” BMWs because enthusiasts haggle about a 3000$ miata, let alone the “jalopnikspecial” 30,000$ 320i sedan. Most enthusiasts aren’t trust fund daughters or balding middle aged accountants with mistresses to impress.
2) Eh, just wait for land to increase in price. They’ll be back. Just with less mind control agents in them this time.
1) No one buys those new anyways. I’m convinced Volvo would do more business if it only sold cars with 100k miles on them in the first place.

While the dynamics you describe with the USSR and its demise were true, they were a minor part of the story. The Compromise happened before Glasnost was a glimmer in Gorbachev’s eyes.

I’m going to have to fight you on #2. If anything, 80 stories is the new norm (at least in NYC). Look at what’s going on in Midtown - 432, One57, Steinway, Vanderbilt Tower, etc... Also Long Island City? I think the age of the supertower has only just begun, at least in NYC.
